Cappuccino vs Latte vs Flat White: What’s the Difference?

If you’ve ever stared at a café menu wondering what actually separates a cappuccino, latte, and flat white, you are not alone. While all three drinks are espresso-based and contain steamed milk, the texture, milk ratio, and overall flavour experience are surprisingly different.

At Humble Coffee Roasters, we believe great coffee starts with understanding what’s in your cup. Whether you’re new to specialty coffee or already have a favourite order, knowing the differences between these classics can help you order a drink you genuinely enjoy, and get the most out of every coffee purchase.

What Is a Cappuccino?

A cappuccino is known for its balanced structure and bold coffee flavour. Traditionally, it contains equal parts espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam. Although in Canada this can be served in any size, the best cappuccino comes in an 8 ounce cup.

The thick layer of foam creates a lighter, airier texture while allowing the espresso to remain prominent. If you enjoy a rich coffee flavour with a velvety, foamy finish, a cappuccino is likely your go-to.

What Is a Latte?

Lattes are smoother, creamier, and more milk-forward. They typically contain one or two shots of espresso with a larger amount of steamed milk and just a thin layer of foam on top.

Because of the higher milk ratio, lattes have a softer coffee flavour and a more approachable taste for casual coffee drinkers. They are also commonly used for flavoured drinks like vanilla, caramel, or seasonal specialties.

A latte is ideal if you prefer a milder, creamy coffee that you can slowly sip throughout your morning.

What Is a Flat White?

Originating from Australia and New Zealand, a flat white features espresso with steamed milk but very little foam on top. Like a cappuccino, a flat white is traditionally 8 ounces.

What makes a flat white unique is the finely textured milk that feels silky and smooth rather than thick or bubbly. The result is a stronger espresso flavour than a latte, but a smoother texture than a cappuccino.

For many coffee lovers, the flat white offers the best balance of boldness and creaminess.

Which One Should You Order?

  • Cappuccino: Stronger flavour, thick foam, lighter texture

  • Latte: Creamy, mild, milk-forward

  • Flat White: Smooth, velvety, balanced espresso flavour with very little foam

The best choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Once you understand the differences, ordering coffee becomes less about guessing — and more about finding the drink that actually suits your taste.
